For that they take additives in their diet when they are pregnant. This additive is Saffron (Kesar, 'Kungumapoovu' in Tamil). It is deep red in color assuring the mothers a red baby. It is got from the dried stigma and styles of the flowers of the plant, Crocus sativus. Its flowers are violet in color. The plant has no seeds and hence it is propagated with corms found underground.
Flowers of saffron bring high price as it is a spice, coloring and also a seasoning agent. Hence this wonder flower is also known as Vegetable Gold!
